When JPG is the practical destination for an AVIF image
AVIF stores photos efficiently, but JPG remains the safer choice for older editors, upload forms, office software, and devices that do not decode AVIF. Converting creates a new JPG from the pixels your browser decodes; it does not merely rename the file.
JPG is a lossy format and cannot retain transparency. ImgMini places transparent areas on white, then applies the selected quality level. Keep the original AVIF when you may need its transparency or want to make another high-quality export later.
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent AVIF pixels need a solid background.
Use the preview and file size together; repeated lossy conversion can compound artifacts.
Choose JPG when compatibility matters more than modern compression
Use JPG for a photographic image that must open almost anywhere. Choose PNG instead when the AVIF contains transparency, interface graphics, or text that should remain crisp through a lossless export.
Checks before downloading
- Inspect faces, gradients, and fine texture in the comparison view before downloading.
- Use one high-quality conversion from the original rather than repeatedly converting saved JPG copies.
- Expect the JPG to be larger than a well-compressed AVIF even when it looks similar.
Questions
Are my images uploaded to ImgMini?
No. ImgMini runs the conversion in your browser. The selected files stay on your device unless you choose to share them elsewhere.
Why can an AVIF file fail to open?
AVIF decoding depends on the browser. Recent Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox builds work best.
