Practical guide

Understand what browser-based PNG compression can and cannot do

PNG is a lossless format, so it does not expose a photographic quality slider like JPG or WebP. ImgMini decodes the image and writes a clean PNG copy, which removes common embedded metadata and may change the file size depending on the browser encoder.

This is intentionally not lossy color quantization. A specialized PNG optimizer may produce a smaller file, and an already optimized PNG can remain the same size or grow after re-encoding. For a major reduction, consider WebP when the destination supports it.

Output Lossless PNG

Pixel colors and transparency are exported without an adjustable lossy quality stage.

Useful for Clean re-encoding

The new browser-generated file omits common metadata carried by the source container.

Size result Not guaranteed smaller

PNG encoder choices and the source optimization level determine the final byte count.

Choose the smallest format that still meets the image requirements

Keep PNG for transparency, sharp interface graphics, and workflows that require lossless raster output. Use PNG to WebP when broad modern-browser support is enough and reducing bytes is the stronger goal.

Checks before downloading

  • Check the reported new size instead of assuming re-encoding reduced the file.
  • Keep PNG for assets where exact colors and crisp text matter.
  • Compare WebP visually before using it for screenshots or flat graphics.

Questions

Are my images uploaded to ImgMini?

No. ImgMini runs the conversion in your browser. The selected files stay on your device unless you choose to share them elsewhere.

Is PNG compression lossy?

This PNG tool keeps PNG output lossless. If you want lossy compression, use PNG to WebP.
