Preserve WebP transparency in a broadly editable PNG
Converting WebP to PNG is useful for logos, stickers, interface assets, and downloaded graphics that need to open in software with limited WebP support. PNG can retain the decoded transparency and stores the exported pixels losslessly.
Lossless output does not mean the original WebP was lossless. Any artifacts already present in the source remain in the PNG, and the resulting file is often larger because PNG is less efficient for photographs and many complex graphics.
The decoded WebP pixels are exported without an additional lossy quality stage.
PNG commonly needs more storage than WebP for the same visible image.
Use PNG for compatibility and editing, not as an optimization step
PNG is the practical choice when an editor rejects WebP or the image needs transparency. If the image is already ready for a website, retaining WebP will usually be better for transfer size.
Checks before downloading
- Inspect semi-transparent shadows and antialiased edges in the preview.
- Avoid PNG for large photos unless the next tool explicitly requires it.
- Keep the original WebP as the delivery asset when browser support is acceptable.
Questions
Are my images uploaded to ImgMini?
No. ImgMini runs the conversion in your browser. The selected files stay on your device unless you choose to share them elsewhere.
Can PNG output be larger?
Yes. PNG is often larger than WebP, especially for photographic images.
